Recently, according to foreign media reports, research firm MarkLines data statistics show that in the second quarter of this year, BYD’s global sales (980,000 vehicles) exceeded Honda Motor (920,000 vehicles) and Nissan Motor (790,000 vehicles), becoming the world’s seventh largest automaker. The reason for this is mainly due to strong demand for its affordable electric vehicles.
Specifically, in the April-June period this year, most mainstream automakers, including Toyota Group and Volkswagen Group, saw sales decline, while BYD sold 980,000 new vehicles globally, up 40 percent from a year earlier. It is reported that mainly thanks to its overseas sales growth, BYD overseas sales in the second quarter of 105,000 vehicles, an increase of nearly two times.
For reference, in the second quarter of last year, BYD ranked 10th in the world with sales of 700,000 vehicles. Since then, BYD has outsold Nissan Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Co., and in the most recent quarter, Honda Motor Co., for the first time.
At the moment, the only Japanese carmaker to outsell BYD is Toyota. In the second quarter of this year, Toyota led the global sales rankings with 2.63 million vehicles sold. Byd is now playing catch-up with Ford, which sold 1.14 million vehicles in the second quarter of this year, up from 1.12 million last year.
In the first half of this year, China widened its lead over Japan in car exports. Among them, Chinese automakers exported more than 2.79 million vehicles overseas, up 31 percent year on year, while Japanese auto exports fell 0.3 percent year on year to less than 2.02 million units during the same period.
It is understood that in addition to BYD’s ranking climb, in the second quarter of this year, Chinese automakers Geely and Chery Automobile also ranked among the top 20 in global sales.
