According to Reuters, Toyota Motor executives revealed that the company is currently working on upgrading most of the pure fuel vehicles under the Toyota and Lexus brands to hybrid (HEV) models and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, and eventually achieve the “hybrid” of all models.

“Going forward, we plan to evaluate whether full hybrid makes sense on a line-by-line basis,” David Christ, Toyota’s head of sales and marketing for North America, told Reuters. These evaluations will be carried out with each model redesign.

Different from other car companies’ strategy of “replacing fuel vehicles with electrification”, Toyota’s comprehensive hybrid is relatively conservative, which is also related to the company’s consistent pessimistic attitude towards the electric vehicle market. In January, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda had previously said he believed the global share of electric vehicles would only reach 30% at most. The advantage of Toyota is “multi-path”, that is, the development of various power routes at the same time to meet different consumer needs.
Toyota pushes for full hybrid strategy

It is reported that in the US market, Toyota’s best-selling model is the RAV4, and its hybrid version has accounted for half of sales. In 2026, this model is about to be replaced, and sources pointed out that Toyota is likely to abandon pure fuel models from this replacement product.
